Does the old man have a name? If he does, he's forgotten it long ago, and no one who deals with him seems to know it either.
The Old Man wears dirty, stained robes of a vague grey-blue. His long hair and beard is white and tousled; everything in the world seems to be stored in it haphazardy, from take-out menus to complicated scrolls. A heavy steel manacle is fastened around his left wrist, apparently seamlessly, and from it hangs a heavy chain that leads into a small bag at his waist.
His cottage is entirely unimpressive from the outside, but from within it is much larger. It's still not very impressive, filled with piles of paperwork and assorted junk. How he gets around in that mess, no one can truly say. Random experiments lie haphazardly all around, and frequent explosions come from his laboratory.
Despite his apparent lack of all common sense the Old Man is highly respected as a wizard and magical researcher. He would probably be running half the world... if he could find his notes...
Also, he may or may not be a god.
