So far, I like my warshade a lot more than my peacebringer. I think Nine Moon Midnight might go shapeshifter, instead of mostly staying with the human-shape powers. It's early, though, so we shall see. The name Nine Moon Midnight is adapted from the opening lines of my favorite poem, Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking by Whitman.

The Story So Far!

Nine Moon Midnight is the creature made from the human Laura Baptiste and the kheldian Two Moon Shadow. (If I ever work up the nerve, I'll write that down as a short story and post it somewhere.) Laura Baptiste had an overwhelming desire to be a superhero, but no money, mutation, mastery, or magic to let her realize her dream. Her drive was so strong it bordered on the unstable - hey, but she's a superhero, being two shakes shy of sanity is perfectly normal. (Just look at Batman...). Two Moon Shadow was entranced by Laura's passion for poetry and music, the only thing the human loved second to superheroing. And so, Nine Moon Midnight.

In light of Laura's past emotional state and Two Moon Shadow's history, Nine Moon - or Moon, or Midnight, or NMM, or Niner, she's been called all these - was recommended for the Mentorship Program by Hero Corps Recruitment. Enter Steam Knight, a normal guy with a steam-powered supersuit and somewhat indefatigable dedication to Justice. Steam Knight was involved in a mission that got some bad press. Maybe he was too rough, maybe not, who knows? But Hero Corps now has him doing special duties, which translates to babysitting this one new heroine, showing her the ropes, and steering her right.

Nine Moon thinks Steam Knight seemed kind of cranky at first, but she's been listening to him, trying her best, and he did seem to grow a little less grumpy. Steam Knight asks her a whole lot of questions about kheldians and warshades - she doesn't know/remember some of what he asks, but she answers what she can. After all, he's the one who'll eventually sign her off of the Mentor Program.

Nine Moon has been having the time of her life so far. She's made some new friends, fought a lot of badguys (and mostly won so far), and even joined a Canadian supergroup called 49 NORTH. There's also this really gung-ho military guy. Raczhek. Some kind of cyborg or something? He says he's been assigned to her, but Nine Moon didn't get confirmation from Hero Corps. Oh well, he's really useful in a fight, that's for sure, and she's made a note to check this out with Steam Knight next time she sees him...

Steam Knight's Rules of Heroing

  1. Assume nothing. Always check your facts. Always expect your opponent knows your plan.
  2. There are heroes and there are Heroes. Real heroes have a personal code. The are role models. Unlike other would-be heroes, they don't do "whatever it takes" to get the job done. They don't become the enemy in order to defeat it. In this job, you'll come across a lot of twisted, perverse individuals. Don't become like them in the name of Justice.
  3. Never get drunk at a party and tell the mayor what you really feel about him in public.
  4. Never get too confident.
